One Minute Communication Tips

Got a Meeting? Make a Difference. PDF Print Email

We’ve all had lazy days where we show up at meetings and do nothing more than take up space…we don't deliver a message, we aren't engaged or we don't participate.

Here's a tip: Don’t do this.

Back-to-back meetings are not a good excuse to merely show up. Instead, show up to every meeting with a purpose.

Ask yourself these questions when preparing to make an impact, drive an action or share a point of view:

• Why am I in this meeting?

• How am I contributing to the meeting’s success or failure?

• Is there a specific value I can bring?

• Am I being a disruptor in this meeting? (Do I want to be a disruptor?)

• What point of view can I share?

• Am I detracting from or adding to the meeting goals?

• What provocative questions can I ask?

• What key messages can I deliver?

From Subject Matter Expert to Leader PDF Print Email

Managers who transition from a functional or technical role to a leadership role need to leave behind some of the very competencies that built their reputation. Learning new leadership skills can be challenging at first.

Seeing the Big Picture
As leaders move up, their perspective needs to evolve from tactical, short-term thinking to a more strategic point of view and communicating that strategy…clearly and often. Working “on the business” instead of “in the business” may not come naturally.

Working through Others
Successful leaders keep an eye on goals while aligning roles, skill sets and responsibilities…this requires flexibility and evolved leadership strengths. Crisp, clear and motivational communication is critical when working with people to accomplish goals.

Building Critical Relationships
Leadership is less about “me” and more about “we.” By using strong communication skills, successful leaders build trusted relationships. Rather than trying to be heroes, winning leaders make heroes of others.

Communication is Leadership PDF Print Email

Great leaders stand out in a crowd – we’ve all seen them. They are authentic. They are inspirational. They communicate clearly. Don’t waste a great opportunity to strengthen your leadership muscle with a sloppy communication style by following these three tips:

Great Leaders...Win Hearts and Minds
Share more than facts. Inspire people by sharing a little bit of who you are and what matters to you. Showing a slightly vulnerable side will make you relatable and help you build a more motivated team.

Great Leaders…Rock First Impressions
A research report from New York University found that we make 11 major decisions about one another in the first seven seconds of meeting. Whether it's a one-on-one encounter or a formal presentation, make a big impact in those first seven seconds.

Great Leaders…Ditch Corporate Lingo
Audiences tune out when they hear corporate speak and technical content that they don’t understand. Don’t waste an opportunity. Use anecdotes, analogies and pictures to tell stories. Keep it simple to drive understanding.
